Oct 4, 2016 · Step 2: Remove the engine cover. In order to gain access to the EGR tube, you'll have to remove the engine cover. There are usually three or four bolts that secure the engine cover to the top of the engine. Using a ratchet extension and the correct sized socket, remove the bolts and then remove the engine cover.

This necessitated the replacement of the entire EGR cooler assembly, which includes an EGR anyway. Apparently the EGR valve itself was not at fault. Apparently this part is only supplied by BMW, too - at a price of ~£500. Fortunately for me, the installation was fairly simple so the entire job wasn't that much more painful.
